Brian Eno - Apollo: Atmospheres & Soundtracks [12", LP]

I've been playing this APOLLO: ATMOSPHERES & SOUNDTRACKS album by BRIAN ENO really a lot over the past weeks. It's always been one of my favourite Eno albums, but i found it very hard to get my hands on a copy on vinyl. A few weeks ago i did, and since then it's been on heavy rotation. Eno's younger brother ROGER ENO and DANIEL LANOIS collaborated with him on this project, which was inspired by the Apollo moon missions. The result is a beautiful serene, ethereal, and sometimes a bit eerie and spooky ambient album. If you close your eyes and imagine yourself floating in space, this is the perfect soundtrack. Since it's such quiet music, it's important that your vinyl copy is in perfect condition - and mine is, fortunately. My favourite track of the album is without doubt the astonishing An Ending (Ascent). I learned it's a popular "funeral tune" these days, and that doesn't really surprise me, but i'm not loving it less because of that. It's simply other-worldly.
Fun fact: Slowdive always have a tape playing with Deep Blue Day before they go on stage, and And Ending (Ascent) when their show is over. It makes their wonderful live shows complete.

David Bowie - ★ (Blackstar) [12", LP]

Look up here, i'm in heaven.
I've got scars that can't be seen.
I've got drama, can't be stolen.
Everybody knows me now.
(from the song Lazarus)

One of the coming days i was going to write a little piece about ★ (pronounced as BLACKSTAR), the new DAVID BOWIE album. No hurry, i thought, because there are already thousands of reviews posted ever since it came out last Friday on his 69th birthday. So it would be a little personal thingy anyway, about how he managed to impress me once again with such a great and innovating album. But this morning, while it was still January 10th in New York where he lived - and early in the morning on the 11th here - the news broke that Bowie had died. He managed to hide this terrible disease he was suffering from for the past 18 months extremely well for the outside world. So now, about 14 hours later, after a day at work with enough distraction to get me through, i'm sitting here behind my desk at home. Listening to the new album, in tears, and pretty much devastated. I never thought it would have this effect on me, but apparently it has.

He's been part of my life ever since i started to listen to music in a serious way. During my highschool days, in the 80's, i was a real teenage Bowie fan. My first Bowie concert was at the Glass Spider Tour in 1987, and even though the critics didn't spare him at the time, i thought it was amazing. I saw him in a very different setting in 1996 during the Outside tour. Once again i was thrilled to see him on stage, even though by that time i was mainly into bands like Smashing Pumpkins, Pixies and Sonic Youth - but Bowie's always been a constant factor in my life and i never lost him out of sight. Very probably because his work is so diverse, and the man himself has always been reinventing himself. Most of the times well-received, sometimes less, but at least he's always been true to himself. And, even though he's been mainly doing things on a low level from 2004 (when he had a heart attack) to 2013 when The Next Day came out, he's been making artistically interesting albums right until his death. Not many artists do that. I heard someone say that Johnny Cash did that as well, but even though i have great respect for the Man In Black: those were mostly cover songs, and it was all thanks to Rick Rubin. Bowie did it all by himself, with the help of great musicians he chose by himself.

In the coming weeks, there will be loads of articles about the lyrics of the songs on ★, and how they should be interpreted now that we know that he made this album while he knew he was dying. Some are pretty obvious. Lazarus in particular, as you can see underneath the picture. I Can't Give Everything Away, Dollar Days, the title track... subtle hints all over. Even now i that am listening to Girl Loves Me, still with tears in my eyes on this black and rainy Monday evening, i keep on hearing Where The Fuck Did Monday Go? As if he knew he'd be gone before the day started. Or maybe he did; it wouldn't surprise me.

One of the things that i deeply respect Bowie for in this whole situation, is that he never issued a press release or anything that he had cancer. He didn't want his artistic outings to be overshadowed by that fact. Even when the Lazarus musical premiered in New York a few weeks ago, he managed to be there, staying the gentleman that he was. For everyone in the audience it was like he was standing on stage gloriously after the show, but only few people know that right after, he had to sit down and recover for quite some time because it took so much energy.

Goodbye David Robert Jones, may you rest in peace. And thank you for everything.

Something happened on the day he died.
Spirit rose a meter then stepped aside.
Somebody else took his place and bravely cried:
I'm a Blackstar. I'm a Blackstar.

Ringo Deathstarr - Pure Mood [12", LP]

PURE MOOD by RINGO DEATHSTARR is already out for some time now. Despite the fact it was listed at #13 in my Finest Vinyl of 2015 list, i hadn't had the time yet to write something about it. It's their fifth album, and i must say it's yet another awesome release by this Austin TX trio. And it's loud! Heavy Metal Suicide reminds me of the louder songs by Smashing Pumpkins (like Bullet With Butterfly Wings or Zero) while Big Bopper definitely has a Slow-vibe (one of MBV's best songs).
Show Me The Truth Of Your Love on the other hand is as gently as can be. My favourite track is Guilt. I think it's actually one of the best songs they ever did, with Alex' sweet vocals over a a really powerful groove. Also this song sounds a bit like Smashing Pumpkins, which in this case isn't all that weird because Jeff Schroeder plays some guitar on it. All in all, this album rocks. Colour Trip is still my favourite Ringo Deathstarr album, but this one comes probably right after that now. And if i'd had the time to play it more often before i made that yearlist, it would've been in the top 10 somewhere. Ah well, who cares. Club AC30 made 500 vinyl copies: 250 on "lemonade yellow" and 250 on "minty green". I've got that last version as you can see on the picture, and it looks pretty cool.

Revolver - 45 [12"]

This 45 EP was the first release by REVOLVER, a UK shoegaze band that was around from 1990 to 1994. After this, they released two more singles (Crimson and Venice), and the songs from those three together would be on their first album (Baby's Angry; only came out on CD) which is actually a compilation for that matter. They released two more singles and a full length after that, and then they called it a day. The band's singer, guitar player and songwriter Mat Flint would become bass player for Death In Vegas. Heaven Sent An Angel, which is the first song on this EP, has always been one of my favourite songs on the Indie Top 20 Vol.13 CD (a great compilation from 1991). So i'm happy i recently came across this 12" by coincidence. The other song on the A-side, Painting Pictures, is brillant as well. With those noisy guitar eruptions it reminds me a lot of the band Ride. The B-side is unfortunately not as strong as the A-side, but it's still pretty good stuff. Especially Cherish is worth checking out.

Curve - Faît Accompli [12"]

Romanesco is a vegetable that you don't see that often in shops or at markets, at least not over here in Holland, so the first time i saw it somewhere i thought "hey, that's what's on the FAÎT ACCOMPLI single's cover!". Back in the days i only owned the cd-maxi of this CURVE song, and i honestly thought the artwork was a microscopic detail of some kind of sea plant or so. Funny. Anyway, only recently i got my hands on this 12". The single is one of Curve's best songs as far as i'm concerned. It's from the Doppelgänger album, and that period was definitely their heyday. Arms Out and Sigh are non-album tracks that can only be found on this maxi, and they're pretty good actually.

Slowdive - Outside Your Room EP [12", Promo]

My SLOWDIVE vinyl collection is pretty big, but not complete yet. For example the OUTSIDE YOUR ROOM EP was missing until now. But I got my hands on the promo edition recently, so that's at least another step in the right direction. The EP has two songs from Souvlaki: the single Alison (the Outside Your Room title of this EP comes from the lyrics of this song) and the dubby track Souvlaki Space Station. Plus there are two songs that only appear on this 12": So Tired and Moussaka Chaos. The last one being more or less a remix, or alternate take, of Souvlaki Space Station. And So Tired is a beautiful dreampop song that definitely wouldn't have been out of place on the album. I did have these songs on vinyl already, on the bootleg 2LP edition of Souvlaki, but to finally own a copy of the original version of this EP is 10 times better of course. Now still looking for the regular edition with the picture sleeve. The quest continues! ;)
