Ringo Deathstarr - Sparkler [12", LP]

SPARKLER was released already on CD in 2009, but it finally saw the light of day on vinyl in 2011. It's a compilation of older tracks and demos by RINGO DEATHSTARR. Like already written earlier, i love this band's sound. Bought this one at the same show as the Shadow EP. It's one out of 800 on blue/white swirled vinyl.

Label: Club AC30
Cat.nr.: AC308091
Year of release: 2011

SIDE A:
01. Swirly
02. Starrsha
03. Some Kind Of Sad
04. Down On You
05. Sweet Girl

SIDE B:
01. In Love
02. Summertime
03. Rats Live On No Evil Star
04. Your Town

Ceremony - Someday [7"]

The song SOMEDAY reminds me a bit of The Cure's In Between Days, sung in a New Order kind of way by A Place To Bury Strangers. The funny thing is that both band members of CEREMONY used to be in a band called Skywave, together with another guy who later formed A Place To Bury Strangers. So the connection's certainly there.

There were only 500 made of this limited 7" which came in a generic paper sleeve.

SIDE A:
01. Someday

SIDE B:
01. Cracked Sun

The Ocean / Burst - Split [7"]

A very fine release on Garden Of Exile Records. THE OCEAN are from Berlin and their post-metal is quite epic and bombastic; BURST were from Kristinehamn in Sweden and their sound was a bit more related to hardcore. They sadly broke up in 2009.
700 copies were made of this limited split 7": 350x blue, 350x clear. As you can see i have a copy of the clear version.

Label: Garden Of Exile

Year of release: 2005

SIDE A:
01. THE OCEAN - Killing The Flies

SIDE B:
01. BURST - Flight's End

Soulsavers - Kingdom Of Rain [7"]

I really dig the warm voice of Mark Lanegan. Either you love him or you hate him. He did the vocals on this one-sided 7" by SOULSAVERS. A dark, folky song. And on the B-side there's this cool etching:

Lush – Sweetness And Light [12”]

SWEETNESS AND LIGHT is another one of those great dreamy LUSH songs. All 3 tracks ended up on their Gala EP compilation album, later that year.

Sugar – Beaster [12”, EP]

BEASTER was released in between the SUGAR debut album, Copper Blue, and its successor: F.U.E.L.
It’s a bit heavier and darker than Copper Blue, although the songs were
recorded during the same sessions. I ran into this EP at Mint Records in Copenhagen; by coincidence actually. I didn’t find anything interesting in the pop/rock section but then this one caught my eye on the first row of the metal LP’s. I guess it was put there because of the title and the fact that the cover art is a little bloody.

Curve - Doppelgänger [12", LP]

CURVE's debut album DOPPELGÄNGER is still my favourite one of this band. Ever since i saw the Clipped video on MTV's 120 Minutes, i was hooked. That song came from the Cherry EP which was released a year earlier, so when this album came out i bought it immediately. On CD that is; this LP i bought at Nostalgipalatset in Stockholm some years ago.

Label: Anxious Records
Cat.nr.: ANXLP 77
Year of release: 1992

SIDE A:
01. Already Yours

Fever Ray - Stranger Than Kindness [7"]

Like the Mercy Street 7", this limited piece of vinyl (999 numbered copies) was released after Triangle Walks, the final single of the FEVER RAY album, came out. STRANGER THAN KINDNESS is of course a Nick Cave cover - and Here Before, a Vashti Bunyan cover, wasn't featured on the album either. A nice collector's item these days.

Year of release: 2009

Catherine - Songs About Girls [7"]

Being a massive Smashing Pumpkins fan, this was a single i just had to buy when it came out and i saw it lying in my local record store. CATHERINE was the band of Kerry Brown (Smashing Pumpkins' bass player D'Arcy's husband at the time), and Billy Corgan produced the song on the B-side; It's No Lie. A pretty much unknown band to many, but still quite worth checking out if you're into 90's alternative rock.
This single is part of the Rough Trade Singles Club series.

Sleepy Sun - Sleepy Son [10"]

Just like the other 10" EP (New Age) lifted off SLEEPY SUN's debut album, this one comes in a nice splattered colour. Besides the title track it features the amazing Sandstorm Woman, which in a later stage was featured on their second album Fever.

Label:

Year of release: 2009

SIDE A:

SIDE B:

Crocodiles - Sleep Forever [7"]

I bought this single because of the B-side. CROCODILES' cover of Deee-lite's 1990 hit song Groove Is In The Heart is so cool. And including the Beach Boys classic California Girls in the last part of the track just finishes it off.

Label: Fat Possum Records

01. Sleep Forever

SIDE B:

The Sundays - Can't Be Sure [12"]

A little gem that i found in a second-hand shop called Vibes & Scribes in Cork, Ireland. I've always loved THE SUNDAYS' album Reading, Writing And Arithmetic; and the single CAN'T BE SURE off that album is just an awesome song.

Label:
Rough Trade
Cat.nr.: RTT 218
Year of release: 1989

SIDE A:

SIDE B:
01. I Kicked A Boy
02. Don't Tell Your Mother

Loop - A Gilded Eternity [12", LP]

A record that i ran into by coincidence at the Velvet Vinyl Outlet about a year ago, and of course i couldn't resist buying it. A GILDED ETERNITY is a psychedelic gem that hypnotises you. If you don't know LOOP but are into bands like Spacemen 3 for example, you should listen to this album.

Kevin Shields / The Jesus & Mary Chain - Lost In Translation [7", Unofficial]

As you can see on these pics i have 2 different vinyl colors of this 7": transparent yellow and opaque yellow.
There's no label mentioned. And although therefore very likely unofficial releases, still pretty collectable. The single features 2 songs by KEVIN SHIELDS and THE JESUS AND MARY CHAIN from the LOST IN TRANSLATION movie.

Label: -
Cat.nr.: LITEP 450612
Year of release: 2007

SIDE A:
01. KEVIN SHIELDS - City Girl

SIDE B:
01: THE JESUS & MARY CHAIN - Just Like Honey

Sleepy Sun - New Age [10", EP]

The first time i saw SLEEPY SUN was at the ATP vs. The Fans pt. II: The Fans Strike Back festival. Me and my mates were blown away by them.
Both tracks on this EP are from their first album Embrace. Nice clear/purple splattered vinyl.

Label: ATP Recordings
Cat.nr.: ATPRSP06
Year of release: 2009

SIDE A:
01. New Age

SIDE B:

Baroness - Red Album [12", 2LP]

The RED ALBUM by BARONESS is -to my opinion- still their finest work to date. One of those rock monsters, in the same league as Mastodon's Leviathan or Burst's Origo.

I own two different versions of this classic. The one pictured above is one out of 1400 of the first pressing on Relapse Records; here's the details:

Label: Relapse Records
Cat.nr.: RR6721-1
Year of release: 2008

SIDE A:
01. Rays On Pinion
02. The Birthing

SIDE B:
01. Isak
02. Wailing Wintry Wind
03. Cockroach En Fleur

SIDE C:
01. Wanderlust
02. Aleph
03. Teeth Of A Cogwheel

SIDE D:
01. O' Appalachia
02. Grad

But now it becomes interesting. Before Relapse did their pressings (i believe they've done 5 so far, on various colours), the Hyperrealist label did a one-off pressing of 1000 copies. It's on clear dark red vinyl:

The gatefold sleeve is a glossy one (the Relapse isn't), it's 33 RPM whereas the Relapse version is 45 RPM, and there's a poster included of the artwork. But the really special thing about this release is that it's got etchings on the outer inch of each of the 4 sides. This is what they look like:

One of the coolest things i've ever seen when it comes to etched vinyl.

Label: Hyperrealist

Ringo Deathstarr - Shadow EP [10"]

This SHADOW EP is one of the vinyls i bought at RINGO DEATHSTARR's support show for the Smashing Pumpkins, in Amsterdam last year. I knew the band already but it was the first time i saw them live, and i was pretty much blown away. Although the stage was a bit too big for them, it was a really good show.
This EP came out late 2011 and is filling the gap between their first album (Colour Trip) and the upcoming second, which is planned for later this year.
I love this band's sound. It's kind of a mixture between The Jesus And Mary Chain, My Bloody Valentine and A Place To Bury Strangers. The song Just You is a cover of Angelo Badalamenti's tune that was featured on the second season of Twin Peaks.

Lana Del Rey - Video Games [7", Picture Disc]

One of the singles of 2011. And you can say what you want about LANA DEL REY, but a good song is a good song. And i'm a sucker for good songs.
Apparently there were only 1500 copies made of this picture disc, which was released on Record Store Day's Black Friday 2011. Was lucky enough to pick it up that day at Velvet Records in Leiden.

Lush - Black Spring EP [12"]

The BLACK SPRING EP contains the song Nothing Natural, which is probably my favourite LUSH song. Bought it at Beat Bop in Copenhagen; a shop that's owned by Michael Denner of the band Mercyful Fate. Very happy to run into this 12" in the back of the shop, where Michael has loads of un-sorted vinyls that don't match with his main genres; (hard)rock and metal.

Label: 4AD
Cat.nr.: BAD 1016
Year of release: 1991

SIDE A:
01. Nothing Natural
02. Fallin' In Love

SIDE B:

Chapterhouse - Mesmerise [12"]

First time i heard CHAPTERHOUSE was when i bought a compilation CD called Indie Top 20 Volume 13, back in 1991. Their track Precious One, featured on this 12", was on it and i've loved this song ever since. So i was glad to find this 12" some years ago; can't remember where i picked it up. I think in Stockholm or so.
If you love the band The Big Pink, you should listen to the title track of this MESMERISE EP by the way. A remarkably similar sound.

Swervedriver - Raise [12", LP]

SWERVEDRIVER released only four albums; but this one, their first, is still my favourite. They are often labeled as a shoegaze band but i've always thought they sounded more like American style indie / college rock. Their debut RAISE however is an album that does have some songs on it that could be described as shoegaze. For example Rave Down and Lead Me Where You Dare. But on the other hand, songs like Son Of Mustang Ford and Sci-Flyer remind me more of bands like Sugar and the Pixies.
Ah well, who cares. This is one of those great classics of the alternative 90's. Been looking for a vinyl edition a long time already, so i was extremely happy to find this copy at Copenhagen's Sound Station some time ago.

Label: Creation Records
Cat.nr.: CRELP 093
Year of release: 1991

SIDE A:

02. Pile Up
03. Son Of Mustang Ford

Fleeting Joys - Despondent Transponder [12", LP]

The first time i heard FLEETING JOYS, i was flabbergasted. How could a band sound so much like My Bloody Valentine, yet still be original? On their first release DESPONDENT TRANSPONDER (and the only one released on vinyl so far, 4 years after its original CD release), most of the songs sound like outtakes from MBV's masterpiece Loveless. The band consists of a couple (John and Rorika Loring) from Sacramento, California. Their CD's were issued on both their own Only Forever Recordings and Japan-based Thomason Sounds, but this vinyl edition was released on Norwegian small indie label Fat People Are Harder To Kidnap Records. Only 300 copies, handnumbered, on white vinyl. Amazing stuff.

Label: Fat People Are Harder To Kidnap Records

The Fauns - The Fauns [12", 2LP]

Like Tears Run Rings, Ringo Deathstarr and Fleeting Joys, THE FAUNS are another one of those great new shoegaze bands that let themselves be heard the last couple of years. This is their self-titled debut album and it's just full of awesome songs. Everyone who never heard of this band from Bristol (UK) but likes good old Slowdive, Ride and My Bloody Valentine should check this out. Fragile is to my opinion one of the finest dreampop songs ever made.

The album came out in 2009 but this double vinyl edition saw the light of day in 2010. There were 500 made: 300 on black (the version i have) and another 200 on pink.
The band is currently working on a new album so i'm pretty stoked for that.

Tears Run Rings - Distance [12", LP]

This band might need some introduction. Although having worked together in various other bands and projects since the mid 90's, TEARS RUN RINGS only released their first EP in 2007, called A Question And An Answer. Then came their first full length (Always, Sometimes, Seldom, Never) and DISTANCE is their second album - and the first that's been released on vinyl. Musically it reminds me the most of Slowdive and Chapterhouse. Quality dreampop/shoegaze, and like many of the new breed of shoegaze bands (i don't like the term nu-gaze), they're from the USA. Portland OR, to be exact. This band's definitely worth checking out if you don't know them yet.

There was a limited pressing of only 500 pcs: 300 black, 200 clear. My copy is one of the clear ones.

Lush - Spooky [2x10"]

This is the debut album by LUSH, produced by Robin Guthrie of Cocteau Twins.
SPOOKY came out on two vinyl formats: a regular LP, and this limited 2x10" package. I bought this one in Aarhus at Black Light Records (upstairs from Route 66), a real treasure chest for second-hand vinyl hunters.
I really love this band. Especially their oldest work (this album and the EP's that came before that; later compiled on Gala). And of all the sexy frontwomen of indie bands that i had a crush on at the time (Toni Halliday of Curve, Rachel Goswell of Slowdive, Bilinda Butcher of My Bloody Valentine, Kim Deal of the Pixies), Miki Berenyi is the only one i ever saw live on stage during that time. Sweet memories.

Slowdive - Blue Day [12", LP, Unofficial]

The first thing i wondered when i ran into this thing, at a hidden second-hand record store in Stockholm, was how the quality would be. Because it was obvious that this peculiar SLOWDIVE release was not quite the original release from 1992 - even though the guy in the shop first was trying to convince me it most likely was. Yeah, right. Not only was it sealed and brand new looking; on the back you'll see it hasn't got 7 but 13 tracks, spread over 2 discs. The original BLUE DAY, which costs a fortune these days, is just 1 disc.
"Oh, then you're probably right", he said when i confronted him with that. So when i told him i saw his store was swamped with bootlegs (pointed out a Pantera, Joy Division, Desert Sessions and a My Bloody Valentine on first rows to him - i assume his supplier for that stuff had just come by earlier) he was suddenly very friendly and it was easy to get something off the price.

But back on topic: well, the quality is not that bad. It's not the same of course as the superb recent reissues of Just For A Day and Souvlaki on Music On Vinyl because for this bootleg no master tapes were used, but at least it's value for money if you're a shoegaze vinyl hunter like myself.
The 2 discs come in clear blue and light baby-blue.

The 7 tracks from the rare original are featured, and besides that there's Avalyn 2 from their very first s/t EP, Golden Hair and Albatross from the Holding Our Breath EP, and some tracks from their Just For A Day full length. A bit of a weird mish-mash.
To make it (sort of) look official, the manufacturer has printed Japanese text at the back, so people would think it's some rare Japanese import.

Various Artists - The Psychedelic Sounds Of The Sonic Cathedral [12", LP]

This limited awesome compilation album on yellow vinyl has the subtitle: A Tribute To Roky Erickson And The 13th Floor Elevators. And that's what it is. Thirteen songs in total; the first one being a live recording from 2008 by The Black Angels and the master himself. Furthermore some real good covers like the ones by A Place To Bury Strangers, Dead Meadow, Black Acid (Richard "Death In Vegas" Fearless' other band), I Break Horses (this was the first time i heard of this great band) and Le Volume Courbe (with Kevin Shields).

Iron Monkey - We've Learned Nothing [10"]

On the classic but defunct Man's Ruin Records, a smoke-colored 10" by UK sludge metal band IRON MONKEY. The CD version of WE'VE LEARNED NOTHING is a split with Church Of Misery, but this vinyl only has the 3 Iron Monkey songs on it. One of them, Kiss Of Death, is a Corrosion Of Conformity cover.

My Bloody Valentine - Tremolo EP [12", promo]

This promo edition of the TREMOLO EP by MY BLOODY VALENTINE is a gem that i ran into while going through the racks at Repeat Records in Malmö. I found their Ecstasy And Wine compilation there at the same time. So that's what i'd call a good score.
Recorded during their Loveless period; with three great tracks -besides To Here Knows When- that didn't make it to the album.

Fever Ray - Mercy Street [7"]

After her s/t debut album and the singles lifed off it, FEVER RAY released two limited 7" singles - and MERCY STREET is one of them. The Pains Of Being Pure At Heart - Young Adult Friction & Come Saturday [7"]

This one's about two 7"es at the same time. It should've been about three, but unfortunately i do not own the Everything With You 7", which is the oldest of the three singles lifted off THE PAINS OF BEING PURE AT HEART's s/t debut album.

Both the album and its three singles have the same cover art. The album's in black, and the single that i miss, is in blue. There's also a limited CD EP with this cover, in yellow. I especially like the fact that the vinyls are the same color as the cover art (maroon and green in this case, respectively).
Radio-friendly indie rock, that's what this is. Many people call this shoegaze but if it can be compared at all to My Bloody Valentine and the likes, it would be their pre-Creation (mid 80's) period. Great catchy tunes though, and a very sympathetic band.

The House Of Love - Destroy The Heart [12"]

A great song by a great band. THE HOUSE OF LOVE made some really fine tunes in the late 80's. Most people (if at all) probably know them from their "hit" later on (Beatles And The Stones) which they had while they were signed to Fontana, but i personally like their Creation Records period better. Christine is my favourite song from that period, but DESTROY THE HEART is a good second.

Team Ghost - You Never Did Anything Wrong To Me [10", EP]

TEAM GHOST is a band that was started in 2009 by Nicolas Fromageau, co-founder of M83. He left that band in 2004, and we didn't hear from him until he relased this YOU NEVER DID ANYTHING WRONG TO ME EP in 2010. Musically, it comes very close to M83. Maybe Team Ghost is more shoegaze and M83 is slightly more dance-orientated, but many of these tracks would've fit perfectly on a M83 album.

The 10" shows no sides on the label, but pics of celebrities: so we have a Natassja Kinski side, and a Lou Reed side.

My Bloody Valentine - Ecstasy And Wine [12", LP]

ECSTASY AND WINE is a compilation of two EP's by MY BLOODY VALENTINE that came right before their Isn't Anything album on Creation Records: Ecstasy, and Strawberry Wine. Lazy Records, having released the EP's, released this compilation when the band was getting more and more popular on Creation.
I've had this copy for years (bought it at Repeat Records in Malmö) and it's long out of print, but recently it surfaced again in the UK. Word goes that Kevin Shields himself found a secret stash of this title and is now selling it off, but i don't know if that's true. Anyway you might bump in to a copy if you're lucky. Pretty expensive, but well worth it!

Baroness - Second [12", EP]

Before BARONESS got big with Red Album and Blue Record, they had a few EP's out and this is one of them - their second, d'uh. It's out of print these days and copies are going for big money, but what i really like about this release is that it has a great etching on the back.So it's single-sided.

Alice In Chains - Jar Of Flies/Sap [12", 2LP, Limited Edition]

ALICE IN CHAINS' vinyl double album JAR OF FLIES/SAP was originally released in 1994 on Columbia. The Sap EP had been out in 1992 on CD and simultaneously with the CD release of the Jar Of Flies EP in 1994, this 2LP was released.
Just like that limited pressing, the reissue by Music On Vinyl from 2010 has an orange side A/B and a blue side C/D, while side CD is etched. The biggest difference is that the original pressing had used the band's name logo for the etching, while this re-press has a tribal sun logo.
There were 2000 copies coloured vinyl made by Music On Vinyl; later re-pressings are on black vinyl.

Logikparty - Good Hood [7"]

The debut release by LOGIKPARTY, a no-wave/post punk band from Dublin, Ireland. Only 250 were made of this one. Excellent songs with that typical late 70's/early 80's feel.
I ordered this around release date from a great record shop from Dublin called Road Records, which sadly doesn't exist anymore. The band's drummer Gib used to work there. Nowadays he's running a new shop called Elastic Witch.
